Description: Great place for shopping, one of the only place in the whole city where middle-class women roam freely without their frowning, pot-bellied husbands. Many friendly people chat up foreigners on the overpass. Had great fun in this place!

suffocating!!!!!!!

technically, this is outside new market. u were standing on the over bridge, right? on the other side is hawkers market. the shop underneath has awesome jilapi, man! i miss them! i remember, once i was on the rickshaw passing by, and the smell of jilapi was so good, i stopped my rickshaw, got off, and bought some jilapi. this over bridge goes straight inside the 1st floor.. we used to buy jeans in there. new market is a very nice place to shop, and its a lot open than most other shopping places.

@bengalex i have not got the wrong city. your judgement on the basis of your one and half year stay in dhaka does not justify your comment. i lived in dhaka for 14 years ( between the age of 5 to 19). just because you have not seen anything does not mean they dont exist. what you are saying is true..but you failed to see the other side of that city ..that is all i am saying.

bengalex
@taniahurley Tania, I lived there a year and a half. There are no mini skirts nor alcohol for women in public places. There are very few atheists. You must have the wrong city.

taniahurley
you would be very surprised to know that some parts of dhaka, women wear mini skirts and drink alcohol heavily. veils are on the other hand very common as well. well. there are a lot of atheist in that city . and there are not many religious fanatics in dhaka. dhaka is a very vibrant city and attitude of public is very cosmopolitan even the vegetable sellers themselves are some sort of enterpreneurs ..if you live in dhaka for one week and u cant judge dhaka.

Little piece of hell......

It's actually not as bad as it seems when it's you walking through the crowds. Also, seeing as it's New Market, you really won't face any harsh smells of fruits, raw fish, etc. nor random puddles of mud and other nastiness. Despite the population within this area, it's alot better than many other market places in Dhaka.Oh, you'll notice it's sometime in the morning as well; no pests or mosquitoes in large quantities.

in my eyes our cultural diversity and tolerance is a win win for bengalis and bangladesh....a true democracy with pluralism ( leaving the bastard politicians of course ). and having said that i would like east and west bengal to unite one day..even if this is a hush hush subject. but that should be done through a democratic process i a distant future.

rythmnsoul
man the great thing about bengalis are our religous and heterogenetic diversity..even if we are single ethnic group. i am muslim but easily see the strength in having healthy minority religous groups. arabs and pakis have nothing in common with us actually most arabs and pakis are really retarded, bengalis are mostly tolerant people, we have more in common with the indian nepalese and actually burmese culture. But we still should be proud of our eurasian and arabian influences in our culture.

BengaliAshoka
Your razakar attitude of trying to get barbarian arabs to favour you and sick pakis to favour you has sold the country down the drain. Your attitude of not believing in Bengali people but corrupt politicians and westerners who do not care about BD which has sold BD down the drain. Muhammad Yunis raised 7.5mill Bengali families out of poverty through micro crediting, they made businesses and succeeded-true power to the people.

BengaliAshoka
.. Bengali's have been relatively lucky in our remote geographic position, many river systems and floods hindering armies, infact Islam spread through sufi saints not force to Bengal.

BengaliAshoka
Bengali's are austro-Asiatic and Dravidian peoples. They are homogoneous but considerably diverse ethnic group with heterogeneous origins. You have no evidence of AShoka or any Bengali being descended from arab's. That is jamaat bs propoganda trying to militant islamify Bangladesh. Our ancestors resisted the British in the mutiny of 1857, the greeks never crossed the ganges fearing maagadha then we pushed them out of the indus valley. Pakis have been conquered and mixed but...

It was a political problem , and economic, told u before, and it is not 3 million ,, Check it online the death toll is 300 Thousand...3 million was said by illeterate Sheikh Mujib who didnt study maths properly..And yea, u can pay respect to other cultures, but a Bangladeshi doesnt pay respect to those cowdung eating mallus

India, present day bangladesh is a mixture of race, There is not specific root to it. And this mixture started from 1500 BC when the Aryans came to India. For centuries, Aryans Persians, Mongols came to india for trade , as nomads , or as invaders. Then came the muslims from arabia, persia, mughals from central asia. Syedis(based in Syhlet ) , Abbassi family (descendants of Abbasid Caliphs for example claim themselves decendants of Caliphs of Mecca and decendats of Qurayish. Ahoka is also one
