Born in St. Louis, Missouri 18 Oct 1931 or in San Jose, California 15 Jan 1926. Chuck Berry has not told interviewers which date is correct. He is the most important founder figure in the story of rock 'n' roll guitar playing. His guitar playing consists of instantly recognizable guitar riffs, solos and rythum playing. His own early guitar influences were T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian, Carl Hogan and BB King. He also enjoyed jazz and the Benny Goodman band. His vocal influences included Nat King Cole, Little Richard and Frank Sinatra.

In the early 50's Chuck Berry had a trio who played at local functions. They played a wide variety of music including ballads and country music as well as blues. Material included songs by Hank Williams and Nat King Cole. Berry signed to Chess Records and released the uptempo song 'Maybellene' and it became a top 10 hit. This success was followed by rock 'n' roll gems 'Roll Over Beethoven', 'Route 66' and 'Johnny B. Goode'. Berry rarely rehearsed with a band but picked up musicians to back him as he travelled. He played Gibson semi acoustic guitars, usually the ES-335 stereo model. Chuck Berry performed the 'duck walk' to pleased fans at gigs but the first time he performed the 'duck walk' was to hide the wrinkles in his suit.
