Born Riley King 16th September 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississipi. His aunt brought home records by T-Bone Walker, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lonnie Johnson which got King first hooked on blues. BB King has used several guitars including a Stella as his first guitar when he was 14, a Gibson acoustic, an early Fender Telecaster but has used the Gibson ES-335 guitar since about 1958. He is known as a musicologist and owns about 30,000 records. He acquired the initials 'BB' while DJ'ing, he was nicknamed 'The Blues Boy from Beale Street'. Later shortened to 'BB'.

BB King was influenced by Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt. He plays single note leads, has never played rythum and cannot sing and play at the same time. BB is thought to be the first to do the vibrato technique and also one of the pioneers of bending notes. BB King released many songs and albums for the Bullet label from 1949.
